Independent living skills
We understand that every individual seeks to be independent in all aspects of their life. Vision loss can pose a big obstacle by impairing independence even in basic skills such us mobility, managing home, personal grooming and much more.
Our specialized training programs are aimed at helping people with vision loss build a meaningful and independent life.
1. Orientation and mobility training
Many people with vision loss have difficulty moving around independently. Our Orientation and Mobility training offers assessments for movement problems of individuals indoor and outdoor. We teach skills to navigate independently, safely and gracefully using a mobility cane and sighted guide techniques. In addition, suggesting those with low vision to use appropriate non-optical devices such as a peaked cap, tinted glass and flashlight for better use of vision during travel.
2. Making out money
Our team teaches techniques to identify the different currency notes and coins. These include assistive tools such as Note X, smartphone apps and the arrangement of notes by using racks in one’s wallet.
3. Home management
Many ask us: can a person with vision loss manage household chores independently? The answer is obviously yes provided they are trained to do it. We have a home management ‘kitchen’ at our facility, where we train persons with vision loss on skills including safe kitchen management, adaptations on materials, and techniques for performing specific tasks, such as cooking, dusting, sweeping, ironing, and needle threading.
4. Personal skills
Self-grooming techniques such as applying make-up, ironing clothes, shaving, organizing dresses by colour, filing records and identifying food items etc. are taught under personal skill development.
