Gullapalli Pratibha Rao International Centre for Advancement of Rural Eye Care
GPR-ICARE is LVPEI’s community outreach arm. We began operations in May 1998 with the aim of making high-quality, appropriate eye care accessible to all. GPR ICARE focuses on taking eye care to those who are both geographically removed and economically disadvantaged.
This arm represents the full flourishing of LVPEI’s pyramidal model of eye care delivery.
This ‘bottom-up’ pyramid represents LVPEI’s model of holistic eye care. It sees the creation of sustainable, permanent facilities within communities, staffed and managed by locally trained human resources, and linked effectively with successively higher levels of care.
Why LVPEI
GPR ICARE was established to develop high quality, self-sustaining eye care services in neglected areas of India and to seed similar programs in other parts of the developing world. The arm also trains all cadres of eye care personnel for the provision of efficient eye care services.
Teams from GPR ICARE regularly participate in planning eye health initiatives in the developing world. We undertake operations and research projects to understand the best way to deliver eye care services to communities.
GPR ICARE is home to world renown public health researchers and scientists with pioneering research work in eye health epidemiology.
“The most important [aspect of LVPEI’s work] is the high quality of the work done here….”
Former President of IAPB
“We have greatly benefited from the research infrastructure at LVPEI… [It] offers similar research methods as our labs in Hamburg.”
